Hacker broke into prison computer system trying to save a friend

A Michigan citizen pleaded guilty to trying to hack Washtenaw County government computer system. 27-year-old Konrads Voits took this step in order to help out a friend who was imprisoned in Washtenaw County. Voits registered a phishing domain ewashtenavv.org, which is very similar to the domain of the official website of the County - ewashtenaw.org. After that, using methods of social engineering the hacker tried to lure employees of the County's government institutions to the fake page. In some cases he even called them posing as an IT specialist.

As a result, Voits managed to infect with malware a significant number of computers and steal credentials of 1600 employees, including access data to Xjail system, where the information about inmates' prison sentences is stored. The hacker tried to dramatically shorten the prison term of his friend; however, prison's employees discovered suspicious activity in the system and turned to law enforcement.

Now Voits is facing up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 (Washtenaw County authorities estimated the damage to computer systems after hacker's activities). Observers, however, doubt that Konrads Voits will receive the maximum sentence. Nevertheless, he has a good chance to see his friend in the near future, which was the reason for this sophisticated operation in the first place.
