Hackers stole Nissan clients’ data

Canadian division of Nissan reported that it had fallen victim to a cyber attack. Unknown hackers managed to crack the network of the vehicle-financing department at Nissan Canada. They stole user data on people who bought cars on credit using Nissan Canada Finance or Infiniti Financial Services Canada.  The total number of buyers affected by the incident is 1.13 million. Stolen data includes clients’ names and addresses, models and VIN codes of the cars they purchased as well as the credit rating of the borrowers, the amount of loans and monthly payments.

“We apologize for any frustration and anxiety this may cause our customers, and we thank you for your patience and support as we work through this issue”, reads the official statement. It also points out that even though credit card data was not compromised, the company will offer free annual credit monitoring for a year. At the same time, it’s noteworthy that the hack was discovered back on December 11th. It’s unclear at the moment what were the reasons for Nissan Canada to not report a cyber attack for 10 days.
