1.7 million Imgur accounts were compromised

Very popular image hosting Imgur (46th place in the list of the most popular websites in the world according to alexa.com) reported the breach of 1.7 million accounts and started password resets. The breach was discovered by Troy Hunt, the creator of Have I Been Pwned? project. He reported the problem to the resource administrators and has impressed by how quickly they reacted. “That's 25 hours and 10 mins from my initial email to a press address to them mobilising people over Thanksgiving, assessing the data, beginning password resets and making a public disclosure”, tweeted Hunt. “This is really where we're at now: people recognise that data breaches are the new normal and they're judging organisations not on the fact that they've had one, but on how they've handled it when its happened”.

It is assumed that the leak took place back in 2014. Unknown criminals got a hold of users’ email addresses and passwords only. Passwords were hashed using SHA-256 algorithm; however, since it has been found to be potentially vulnerable, Imgur decided to change passwords of all affected users.
